Michals wit and humor also pulses through his paintings on paper, which are saturated with colors, animated text, and pop-culture imagery. Future Past Tense is Michals’ take on modern-day office culture where days, weeks, months, and years speed by while we remain consumed with work. In his recent photographs, Michals examines contemporary issues through his characteristic use of tongue-in-cheek humor. In the films on view, 2022 and Xanadu, Michals also uses these sculptures, combining oscillating, prismatic colors with a moving backdrop that gives a sense of breath and fluidity to otherwise stationary objects. The Vivid Light festival concluded on 8 June and used innovative sculptures and light installations projected over grand-scale projections for visitors and residents of the city to enjoy. The large-scale kaleidoscope was created by Shirane and Miyazaki using digital 3D computer modelling tools, with each physical panel connected by a zipper. Using a reflective perspex material, viewers are engulfed by a visual effect acting like the interior of a kaleidoscope, with continuously changing perspectives as they move around the piece.
